Bombardier Transportation, in the presence of Minister of Economics, Brigitte Zypries, Saxonian Minister of Economics, Martin Dulig and the mayor of Bautzen, Alexander Ahrens, laid the foundation stone for a new final assembly hall today. With this production hall, Bautzen will set the pace for digital production at Bombardier Transportation and set standards for Industry 4.0 production in the railway industry. Starting from the middle of next year, it will employ around 500 employees.

Bombardier Transportation is investing around eight million euro in the new production hall. This amount is part of the overall investment amounting to approximately 20 million euro which the company wants to invest in the eastern Saxonian city over the next two years. Bombardier Transportation will be primarily commissioning companies from the region for the planning and construction of the new hall.

In the new final assembly hall, production processes, meaning, logistics, production, quality management and test operation will be digitally networked. The production will also be more efficient and flexible as three vehicle types can be manufactured simultaneously. In addition, in comparison to the previous hall, the new building will save nearly one million euro per year in energy, maintenance, and logistics costs. With this investment, Bombardier is continuing the site’s more than 170-year tradition as a beacon in the railway industry.

Michael Fohrer, Head of Bombardier Transportation in Germany, explains the strategic further development of the company and the Bautzen site, “We are reorganizing Bombardier Transportation in Germany. We will secure our ability to compete in the long-term and continue to manufacture the most modern railway vehicles in Saxony and beyond in the future. By investing in the Bautzen plant, we will become global pioneers in Industry 4.0”.
