CALGARY, Alberta, April 30, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — TransCanada Corporation (TSX:TRP) (NYSE:TRP) (TransCanada) has released its 2017 Corporate Responsibility Report, providing a comprehensive update on our performance on environmental, social and governance topics that matter most to the stakeholders, Indigenous groups, landowners and communities involved with or affected by our business across North America.
The annual Corporate Responsibility Report is one of the foundational documents that TransCanada uses to communicate our performance and demonstrate our commitment to safety, building healthy and vibrant communities and protecting the environment.
“We have always strived to be a leader when it comes to safely delivering the energy that millions of people rely on in an environmentally and socially responsible manner,” said Russ Girling, president and CEO of TransCanada. “We recognize that the continued success of our company depends on following through on the commitments we make to our neighbours, partners and communities. Part of how we achieve that is by listening to those who are involved with or affected by our business, and communicating candidly about our performance.”
This year’s report covers performance for the 2017 calendar year and it is the second year we are reporting based on the Global Reporting Initiative’s G4 core option guidelines. We have improved the quality of the report by enhancing our management approach disclosure on the topic of climate change and greenhouse gases (GHGs) and have included new information on topics including our supply chain, Indigenous engagement and how we work with landowners.
Titled Delivering Energy Responsibly, the report is structured into three pillars: ‘A healthy and safe environment and community,’ ‘An engaged community’ and ‘A thriving economy.’ Highlights from 2017 include:
- Conducted 172 emergency preparedness and response exercises
- Invested more than billion in integrity and preventative maintenance programs on our natural gas and liquids pipelines and facilities
- Reduced rates of total recordable occupational health and safety cases for employees and contractors
- Decreased direct GHGs by 24 per cent compared to 2016
- Logged over 15,000 employee volunteer hours
- Invested .1 million in more than 1,350 non-profit organizations in local communities
- Engaged with more than 300 Indigenous communities in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico
- Paid over 5 million in property taxes in local communities
We are proud to be recognized by respected third-party agencies for considering business decisions through the lens of sustainability. We were named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) World Index for the 16th year in a row and earned a place on DJSI’s North American Sustainability Index for the fourth year in a row. Also, for the seventh consecutive year, we were listed among Canada’s Best 50 Corporate Citizens by Corporate Knights magazine and we have been acknowledged as a leader when it comes to enhancing gender equality and diversity throughout the organization. Our efforts to create a gender equal work environment were also recognized by the inaugural Bloomberg Gender Equality Index, where TransCanada was one of two energy companies to be named to the list. We were also recognized by the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) for our actions to disclose carbon emissions and mitigate the business risks of climate change.
