First-Ever Kids Day Provides Open Source Experience and Inspiration Against the Backdrop of the 25th Anniversary of Linux Gala, Women’s Events, Group Fitness and Other Community Activities
SAN FRANCISCO, CA–(Marketwired – June 21, 2016) – The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit advancing professional open source management for mass collaboration, today announced a wide variety of onsite experiences taking place at LinuxCon and ContainerCon North America August 22-24 in Toronto, Canada, including its first-ever Kids Day. This year’s event marks the 25th anniversary of Linux, which offers an ideal forum to inspire the next-generation of technologists and community members who will build, support and manage open source projects for decades to come.
In partnership with MakerKids and Kids on Computers, Kids Day will engage school-aged children interested in learning more about computer programing. The day-long workshop will teach coding for Linux, open source and Arduino and will provide students with a head start on the pathway to the most lucrative job in IT.
With initiatives such as Kids Day and training and event scholarships, among other programs, The Linux Foundation aims to increase diversity in technology and the open source community and support career development opportunities for the next generation, especially those who have traditionally been underrepresented in open source and technology.
“LinuxCon and ContainerCon are recognized for being the place where open source innovators and leaders collaborate to advance today’s most promising technologies, making it a great forum for children to be inspired about what’s next in this space,” said The Linux Foundation Executive Director, Jim Zemlin. “Increasing access to Linux and open source education and providing opportunities to engage in how open technologies are built is important to us. It helps build the talent pool and bring new people to the community, no matter their age.”
LinuxCon + ContainerCon will also feature a 25th anniversary black tie Casino Royale Gala. Attendees are encouraged to break out their formal wear and participate in casino games and enjoy dinner and live entertainment, as well as other activities such as an onsite photo booth, ice wine tasting, cigar bar and Poker 101 tutorial. Discounted dress and tuxedo rentals will be available to attendees — more details will be available soon. Additionally, a VIP reception for speakers, sponsors and press is planned for August 22 and a reception and sponsor showcase will be hosted on August 23, where all attendees are invited to network and check out sponsor products and technologies.
