Bombardier Transportation, along with partner Russian Railway (RZD) is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their Russian signalling joint venture, Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Ltd, today. The milestone is being marked by a Bombardier-hosted customer event, as part of the RZD’s Signalling and CBI Conference, which will be attended by key customers and partners from Russia, CIS, and the Baltics.
Peter Cedervall, President, Rail Control Solutions Division, Bombardier Transportation, said, “Today we’re celebrating 20 years of strong partnership between RZD and Bombardier. The common team has been very successful throughout the 1520 space and is setting new standards for signalling, in terms of technology and project execution. I am convinced that RZD and Bombardier will continue to develop cutting edge technology and develop the industry in the 1520 space as well as in other international export markets.”
A pioneer in the region, Bombardier Transportation (Signal) Ltd was the first international joint venture to be formed for the Russian Railways delivering the BOMBARDIER EBI Lock 950 computer-based interlocking (CBI) system. Since the first station was equipped in Russia in 1999, the company has become an expert in modern rail control for all countries operating the 1520 mm railway gauge. Today, almost 300 stations across Russia, the Baltics, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Eastern Europe have been equipped with Bombardier’s modern CBI systems making the company market leader for implementation volume and level of technology.
The JV is also now at the forefront of introducing the latest-generation radio-based train control (RBTC) to the 1520 market with the BOMBARDIER INTERFLO 550 mainline solution. In commercial operation since 2014 in Kazakhstan, the system is also in delivery on over 1100 km of mainline in Mongolia, the first RBTC overlay upgrade in the market to be implemented using existing interlockings. In Russia, the team is also delivering a modern signalling solution for the Moscow Small Railway Ring Project in cooperation with RZD subsidiary JSC NIIAS, the major institute for signalling research.
Further strengthening this strategic cooperation, in 2012 Bombardier Transportation finalised purchase of a stake in the RZD subsidiary, United Electrical Engineering Plants (JSC ELTEZA), the main signalling equipment manufacturer for the 1520 area. Under this agreement a programme is underway to localise the manufacture of rail control products, the first of which were installed on the RZD network in 2013. In April 2016, to tackle the latest challenges faced by the railway industry, the two companies put into trial operation Russia’s pilot cyber-security for computer-based rail control.
