Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation has been contracted to extend its core rail systems for the high-profile second stage of Australia’s Gold Coast Light Rail.
The Queensland Government, Gold Coast Light Rail operator GoldLinQ, construction partner CPB Contractors, Bombardier and Keolis Downer formalised the contract on April 29.
Stage 2 of the Gold Coast Light Rail system involves a 7.3 kilometre extension to Helensvale where the light rail connects with South East Queensland’s heavy rail system. The extension includes three new stations and will be completed in time for the 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held on the Gold Coast. Stage 1 was completed in 2014 and included an initial 13 kilometres of light rail line and 16 stations.
GoldLinQ CEO Phil Mumford said, “Bombardier would play an important part in delivering the extension and Stage 2 would see the positive working relationship with Bombardier continue.”
Bombardier rolled out the turnkey Light Rail solution for Stage 1. It delivered 14 award-winning BOMBARDIER FLEXITY 2 trams plus provided the electrical and mechanical equipment, vehicles and services related to the implementation of the system, signalling and control systems, communications systems and radio. Bombardier also provides the vehicle maintenance.
Bombardier’s President of Asia Pacific Region, Benoit Cattin-Martel, said, “Bombardier will build on the success of the proven solution provided for Stage 1.The total scope of Bombardier’s work for Stage 2 demonstrates that we are the partner of choice for delivering a highly proven, reliable and complete rail solution for the Gold Coast.”
Bombardier also received the order to supply four additional FLEXITY 2 trams for the Gold Coast in November 2015.
The four new yellow and blue trams, which have become synonymous with the Gold Coast, are due to arrive from August 2017 in time for the Commonwealth Games. The new trams will be used on the Stage 2 northern extension.
