Bombardier Wins at SAE-A’s 2016 Mobility Engineering Excellence Awards

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA–(Marketwired – Nov. 21, 2016) – Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation was honoured at this year’s Society of Automated Engineers – Australasia (SAE-A) Mobility Engineering Excellence Awards held in on November 17. The SAE-A Mobility Engineering Excellence Awards is a premier event for the industry, recognising outstanding contributions to advancing technologies and innovation in the transport mobility field. Bombardier won in the Professional Awards category for its innovative Automated Coupler Cover developed for the Queensland Government’s New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) fleet.

Bombardier’s Automated Coupler Cover will provide protection to coupling connections on the new Queensland NGR trains, lowering the incidence of accidental damage during service. The Automated Coupler Cover mechanism has been designed, developed, tested and manufactured by Bombardier as part of its ongoing commitment to innovation and product safety.

“This is a greatly anticipated event and we are thrilled to be chosen for the second year running as a winner in the Professional Awards category”, said Andrew Dudgeon, Managing Director of Bombardier Transportation Australia. “This prestigious award is a testament to our Industrial Design and Engineering Centre of Excellence in Queensland and our teams across Bombardier Australia who are committed to delivering best-in-class solutions to our customers and for passengers.”

The Queensland Government awarded the NGR project to the Bombardier-led Qtectic consortium in 2013. Working with the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads, the consortium will design, build and deliver 75 six-car electric multiple unit (EMU) trains and maintain them for 30+ years at the new purpose-built maintenance centre in Wulkuraka, Ipswich. The new trains will significantly increase South East Queensland’s train fleet and help to meet the growing demand for public transport in the region. In South East Queensland, the project has and will continue to support more than 500 full-time local jobs and up to 1,500 indirect jobs.

Local design and engineering has been central to the NGR project. Bombardier’s understanding of the unique transportation requirements across Queensland is key to the success of this project which is expected to begin passenger service in the first half of 2017.

Bombardier has been active in Australia for more than 60 years. Today, it has a workforce of more than 1,100 employees across 21 locations and is a complete provider of rail solutions and services.
