TORONTO, Nov. 18, 2015 /CNW/ – Just in time for the holiday season, Glenfiddich® introduces ‘The Original’ to Canadian whisky enthusiasts across the country. Inspired by the pioneering spirit of William Grant’s great grandson, Sandy Grant Gordon, this historic expression is a recreation of the original 1963 Glenfiddich® Straight Malt that started the single malt category.
In 1963 Sandy Grant Gordon helped establish single malt Scotch whisky as a distinct category by promoting ‘The Original’ outside of Scotland, something no other distiller had done before. Previously, blended whisky dominated the market and single malt was only available on request to very few in the know.
In honour of maintaining the legacy of William Grant who, along with the help of his nine children and a single stone mason, constructed the Glenfiddich® Distillery by hand in 1886, Glenfiddich’s® Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, has faithfully created a replica of the liquid that first fell from the distillery’s copper-pot stills on Christmas Day in 1887. By skilfully nosing and tasting the original 1963 sample and following the original recipe from one of Glenfiddich® ‘s 1960s leather bound ledgers; he has exactly reproduced its celebrated fresh and fruity taste.
“Glenfiddich® is one of the few remaining family-owned and operated distilleries in the world and has an unrivalled collection of rare and aged single malts from which our malt masters can draw on to create innovative whiskies,” said Elizabeth Havers, Brand Ambassador for Glenfiddich® and The Balvenie in Canada. “The Original is a true taste of history, and we are delighted to unveil this exclusive whisky in time for the holiday season.”
The heritage of Glenfiddich® The Original is reflected through the bottle design. Presented in the iconic triangular bottle, it sits in a classic black presentation box embossed with gold. The limited edition expression also comes with a booklet that details the whisky’s rich history, making Glenfiddich® The Original, a unique experience for single malt aficionados.
While most whiskies today mature in oak, sherry casks were more prominent in 1963. The result, then and now, is a spirit contrasting many other Glenfiddich® expressions. Rich and golden in colour, the aroma is floral with the hallmark Glenfiddich® pear, followed by lively fruit notes, biscuity with a soft vanilla oakiness and deliciously dry finish. Glenfiddich® The Original is 40% ABV and available in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto for an approximate retail price of $119.90 per 750ml bottle.
